Threat Management Training teaches the Stressfire handgun, shotgun and rifle self defense.  Our courses are designed for people who have never handled a firearm and people who have “been shooters all their life”.  We welcome all levels of students to join us and expand their knowledge of firearms handling and skills.

We recommend that anyone who has chosen or is still questioning the purchase of a firearm for personal protection to read IN THE GRAVEST EXTREME by Massad Ayoob.

1)     CONCEALED CARRY:  This 3-hour course teaches the required information for those interested in acquiring a concealed carry license.  Subjects that will be covered are:  Idaho laws, firearms safety, weapon selection and other related areas pertaining to personal safety.  This course is taught monthly and meets requirements for an Idaho Concealed Weapons Permit.  Please call of a current schedule.

2)      USE OF FORCE SEMINAR:  This eight-hour program includes lecture, the video JUDICIOUS USE OF DEADLY FORCE from Massad Ayoob’s Lethal Force Institute and question and answer time.  The lecture portion includes information regarding: escalation of force from body language and eye contact, verbal intervention, physical response to use of deadly force; color codes of awareness; priorities of survival; interaction with a perpetrator; potential witnesses, responding law enforcement officers and the court system; home defense tactics; post shooting trauma; handgun selection; ammunition selection; holster and accessories selection; concepts of Stressfire; and firearms safety.  We discuss hollow point vs. full metal jacket ammunition and semi-automatic vs. revolver handguns.  The Use of Force Seminar meets requirements for an Idaho State Concealed Weapons Permit.

3)      DEFENSIVE HANDGUN:  This eight hour program covers sight picture; sight alignment; cross eye dominance; presenting your handgun safely from a holster; speed reloading for revolvers and semi-automatic handguns; dominant and non-dominant one handed shooting; Weaver, Chapman and Isosceles two handed shooting stances; stress point indexing; and trigger control.  DEFENSIVE HANDGUN ends with a law enforcement style qualifier and a scenario known as “The Suicide Response Drill”.  Students learn to think and respond under stressful situations and enhance their gun handling abilities.  It is preferred that students have their own weapons, minimum caliber of .380 ACP, but since this is an introductory class pistols and equipment can be rented from Threat Management Training.  If you have your own firearm you will also need a rigid belt holster with covered trigger guard, magazine or speedloader pouches and at least 3 magazines or speedloaders.  Students are required to provide the 200 rounds needed for this class.  Prerequisite:  TMT Use of Force Seminar, state issued Concealed Weapons Permit or police background check.

4)      ADVANCED HANDGUN TECHNIQUES:  TThis twenty hour advanced program continues where DEFENSIVE HANDGUN lets off.  Students will fire from various shooting positions including: roll-over prone, cover crouch, kneeling, shooting from behind cover and barricades and wounded shooter positions.  Students will learn to engage multiple targets and shoot while moving in different directions.  Shooting exercises in this class will include lessons from classes by Massad Ayoob, Jim Cirillo and Ken Hackathorn.  This  This course requires a total of 600 rounds.  Students in this class must provide their own firearm, minimum caliber of .380 acp, three magazines or speedloaders, a rigid belt holster with covered trigger guard and a magazine or speedloader pouches.  A valid state issued Concealed Weapons Permit or police background check is required for this course.

5)     DEFENSIVE REVOLVER:    In the hands of a trained individual, the revolver is more than equal to any other defensive handgun.  This course is designed to teach the techniques of the revolver for personal defense.  Following the same format of the DEFENSIVE HANDGUN course this class will be limited to revolvers only.  Prerequisite: TMT Use of Force Seminar, possession of a state issued Concealed Weapons Permit or police background check.

6)      DEFENSIVE SHOTGUN:  This nine hour course includes classroom time discussing safe handling of shotguns, the correct shooting techniques when firing defensively, various loading and unloading techniques, conditions of readiness, ready and carry positions and different defensive shooting positions.  We also discuss the semi-automatic vs. the pump shotgun and birdshot vs. buckshot and slugs and the different loads available.  We end the classroom session with the LFI tape of STRESSFIRE – SHOTGUN.  On the range the students will fire from the different defensive shooting positions at ranges from 7 to 50 yards.  We will see the effectiveness of the different loads at the different ranges and the stopping power of the defensive shotgun.  There are two shotgun qualifications that the students will shoot.  The course of fire for this program is a total of 75 rounds.  This course is designed for students who have not used shotguns before and for “shooters” who are interested in advancing their knowledge and skills in the use of the shotgun for defensive purposes.  Students are required to provide their own shotgun (12 gauge or 20 gauge is acceptable), 20 rounds buckshot, 25 rounds slug and 25 rounds of birdshot, ear protection, eye protection and a billed hat.  Possession of a state issued Concealed Weapons Permit is required.

I have taken both Defensive Handgun classes offered by Joe Toluse at  Threat Management Training, LLC. The courses were thorough and well planned. Class sizes were kept small so that each student received a great deal of individual attention. Joe is an excellent instructor. I highly recommend his classes to anyone interested in learning essential defensive shooting techniques.

I have taken several courses from Joe Toluse in my pursuit to learn defensive firearm skills from some of the best schools and nationally recognized instructors I can find.
In my opinion, Joe ranks up there with the best of them. His no-nonsense, real world approach to defensive training and proper use of lethal force is invaluable to anyone who is considering that option.
In the LFI tradition, his principles of training go far beyond just teaching shooting skills and surviving a potentially deadly encounter. His students not only learn how to avoid those situations in the first place, but if it should escalate into a lethal force scenario, how to avoid the legal ramifications that could result.
Anyone who has made the serious choice to incorporate the possible use of firearms to defend themselves and their loved ones, and assume the responsibility that goes with that decision, should get professional instruction from Joe Toluse.

I had the pleasure to work with Joe under the Lethal Force Institute flag (various advanced courses including StressFire Instructor) as well as my own rifle program. Very early on, Joe’s particular attention to details indicated his seriousness about the subjects of self-defense and the art of handling and mastering firearms. Joe’s program intends to present his students with the full picture of firearm ownership and their use in self-defense including the legal and ethical use of deadly force. Joe’s commitment to his students is evident in his dedication to keeping his knowledge and skills updated and based on solid foundations.

Joe is supportive, explanatory and encouraging. You can tell that he enjoys sharing his knowledge of firearms with others.  His classes are thorough and interesting and one walks away with a good grasp on what owning a firearm entails.  It's not just about pulling the trigger.  It's about learning techniques, taking the responsibility of knowing your local laws, and acquiring a deep respect for them.  It's about taking the knowledge you've obtained and practicing, practicing, practicing, then practicing some more.

TMT classes can give you the tools needed to defend yourself in certain situations.  Outcomes can never be certain, but by practicing the techniques that you learn and knowing mindsets and statistics that are discussed, the advantage can be yours.

Proper self defense training can make the difference between surviving or not surviving on the street and in the courtrooms. I have been privileged to Study, Shoot and Train with Joe Toluse, Director of Threat Management Training, LLC., at several Firearms Training Classes. I’ve been "behind him on the line" in an Instructors capacity during Advanced Training at the "Firearms Academy of Seattle" and have been his Student during Certification as a "Lethal Force Institute Stressfire Instructor" under Massad Ayoob’s Tutelage.

He has the admirable quality and inherent desire to "Keep People Alive", perhaps due to his experiences in Viet Nam. He is forcefully driven to pass on to his Students the continuing education needed to prevail in a life threatening encounter. I firmly believe his instruction will benefit Shooters from Novice to Advanced.

I consider him a Capable and Worthy Trainer, A Dedicated Student, A good Friend
